WHAT DO YOU DO FOR H&I?
I’m the voice of H&I on social media – I scour the Internet for interesting things to read and discuss as well as publicising events. We are a disparate bunch so I try to use our online presence to engage members and create a sense of community. I plan our social media strategies & generally try to help out wherever I can!
I’m also the Treasurer for the branch, responsible for paying the bills, reporting any large donations from non-dom billionaires, and sending quarterly financial returns to SGP HQ.
WHY DID YOU JOIN?
Firstly, I’d just had my son and needed something to do with my brain and give me a bit of hope for the world I’d brought him into. Secondly, I read SGP policy during the early stages of the referendum and found I had been green all along so decided to put my money where my mouth was.
WHAT’S THE SGP POLICY CLOSEST TO YOUR HEART?
A bit of a boring one here but transitioning to green energy! With our natural resources we have the potential to be a world leader in green energy and to ensure our communities benefit from this transition. Its vital that we create good quality, well payed green jobs to replace those in fossil fuel industries and make use of the great skill and talent available to us in Scotland.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE BRANCH?
I hope that we can grow into many vibrant local branches which will then become an important community resource.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO PEOPLE THINKING OF JOINING?
It’s a very empowering experience – you choose your own level of involvement – one member really can make a difference. There is always something significant to do and interesting people to do it with!
WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS & WHY?
Can I have two?! I love Buachaille Etive Mòr – it’s so ancient and magical. Whenever it comes into view I feel overwhelmed by awe – a comforting feeling of being tiny and insignificant in the heart of nature. The Island of Iona is somewhere I can truly find peace and reflection.
