SCOTTISH GREENS GIVE BACKING TO RMT UNION OVER TRAIN GUARD DISPUTE

Thursday, June 30th, 2016

The Scottish Green’s transport spokesperson, John Finnie MSP will reiterate his, and the party’s, support for campaigning RMT members concerned about ScotRail proposals for driver-operated trains when they assemble outside the Scottish Parliament on Thursday (30 June).

The union argues that removing the conductor and extending driver-only trains would undermine passenger safety and that a guard should work on every service. The RMT is asking the Scottish Government to intervene.

John Finnie MSP said:

“Scottish Greens will always be at the forefront of standing up for workers’ rights and we gave a commitment at the election in May to support trade union campaigns that deliver or keep jobs with decent pay and conditions. [1]

“I’ll continue to discuss with RMT members what MSPs can do to help keep dialogue open with ScotRail and to urge the Scottish Government to intervene. Safety should always be put before profit in the operation of public transport in Scotland. I was glad to have had the opportunity to speak with local RMT members on picket in Inverness both days last week and I will continue to support them.”

A petition to “keep the guards on the train” has so far reached more than 3,300 signatures. [2]
