Although it is our aspiration that we will get an area Greens group for every Highland Council ward, our ‘Inverness Area Greens’ group essentially covers 7 wards. The 5 urban Inverness wards, Culloden & Ardersier and Aird & Loch Ness. We were heading for nearly 10% of the vote in the 2015 Aird & Loch Ness by-election. No mean feat considering it was the first time a Scottish Greens candidate had stood in the ward. All of these wards send representation to the CIA (City of Inverness Area committee). Inverness was granted city status in the year 2000 and you might be surprised to know that it still doesn’t have a democratically elected body entrusted to take care of its affairs. For the moment our primary aim however is to get some Green councillors elected to the Highland Council wards within our area during the local elections in May, 2017.
We want the meeting of Climate Change targets to be taken far more seriously by our Highland Council and believe these can be met whilst improving the quality of our lives and our environment. The Scottish Greens want to develop a stronger system of local government working in co-operation with the Scottish Parliament. We think empowered local bodies, rather than national government, should be the primary tier of government for most purposes. We support a review of how revenues locally are raised. Council tax should be scrapped and be replaced by a more locally controlled system of property taxation.
If you live locally and are interested in getting involved then please do get in touch with us by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. We aim to meet up from 6.30 pm on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at the Velocity Café & Bicycle Workshop in Inverness. You’ll be made very welcome.
