Highlands and Islands Greens welcome the launch of the Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters Marine Energy Park by the UK Government, designed to link university researchers and private companies working in marine energy.
Scottish Greens have always recognised the potential of marine energy in addressing our current and future energy needs, especially in the Highlands and Islands where renewable resources are amongst the most extensive in Europe. Orkney and the Pentland Firth are already well established as centres of cutting edge technology, and this recognition will serve to improve the prospects not only for new breakthroughs, but also as a hub for developing the knowledge and expertise, and providing highly skilled jobs – which are vital in the current economic conditions.
“We are pleased by this announcement by the UK government, which comes not before time,” stated Highlands and Islands Green Convener, Fabio Villani. “The seas around the Highlands and Islands have huge potential for meeting our energy needs, and can at the same time provide a new economic lifeline to some of the most fragile communities in the country. We hope this is just a first step on the road to a thriving, cleaner and greener future.
