Call for Rejection of Plan to Build Fourth Tesco in Inverness

Wednesday, January 11th, 2006

An application submitted by Tesco to build a fourth supermarket in Inverness has been slammed by Eleanor Scott, Green MSP for the Highlands and Islands.

Dr Scott said: “I am very concerned at this application; Inverness is already turning into ‘Tesco town’ with Tesco shops taking more than half of all spending on food in the city.  Inverness city centre and independent traders have been hit hard by the growth of the supermarkets and there is no longer a greengrocer anywhere in the city.  Out of town trading and a fourth Tesco supermarket will only make the position worse.”

The application, which includes a hotel, filling station and doctors’ surgery in addition to the supermarket, has raised concerns among local residents over the extra traffic that will result if the application goes ahead.

Dr Scott said: “This application is against the local plan and I am therefore objecting to it.  I hope many other people will follow suit and back the local businesses that put their profits back into the region’s economy and support local food producers.”
