Eleanor Scott, MSP for the Highlands and Islands, has welcomed todayʼs announcement of £22 million for recycling in Argyll and Bute from the Strategic Waste Fund and called for similar funds to be committed to other rural areas.
Dr Scott said: “This is excellent news for communities in Argyll and Bute and shows both the Council and the Scottish Executive making a real commitment to recycling and, in particular, to community recycling groups. I am delighted to see the recognition that community groups play a vital part in providing local waste management solutions in remote rural areas.”
Dr Scott has been campaigning on behalf of several threatened community recycling groups that were left out of Highland Councilʼs bid to the Strategic Waste Fund.
She said: “I hope that todayʼs announcement will be followed by similar funding packages for other parts of the Highlands and Islands. It seems that the Executive is prepared to commit resources to the community waste sector and I look forward to seeing similar levels of funding for the other local authority areas.”
